SELECTED LINGALA WORDS FOR THIS WEEK - 2

1. Libulu - Hole e.g Nakotimula libulu (I'll dig a hole.)

2. Ntango - Time  e.g Okozonga ntango nini?  (When will you return?)

3. Kofanda/kovanda - to live/stay for example Ozali kofanda wapi? (Where do you live?)

4. Ngake - Thunder e.g Nazali konganga lokola ngake mpona pasi na ngai (I cry out because of my pain.)

5. Pembe - White e.g Bamino naye ezali pembe lokola miliki (His teeth are white like milk).

6. Pembeni - Close by/nearby, eg Nalingi ozala pembemi na ngai (I want you close to me)

7. Lokuta - Lie e.g Oyo ezali lokuta te (This is not a lie).

8. Soki - if, for example Soki olingi ngai, bala ngai (If you love me, marry me).

9. Na - With/And, for example Nazali na esengo mingi (I have a lot of joy).

10. Sukola - Wash e.g Sukola maboko nayo (Wash your hands).

11. Elamba - Cloth/ dress, for example Nakosombela yo elamba (I'll buy you a dress).

12. Defisa - Lend, for example Defisa ngai mbogo moke (Lend me some money).

13. Kozua - to have e.g Nazwi mbongo mingi (I have a lot of money).

14. Malamu - good/ well e.g Nzambe azali Malamu (God is good).

15. Ngai - Me/ I, for example Mpona na nini olingi ngai te? (Why is it that you don't love me?).

16. Ndoto - dream, for example Ndoto nalotaka ezali nse yo (I always dream is of you).

17. Kolakisa - to show to e.g Lakisa ngai epai ya Lumumba (Show me Lumumba's place).

18. Komona - To see e.g Moto oyo akoki komona eloko moko te  (This person cant see anything.)

19. Kozela - To wait e.g Nzela nagi awa (wait for me here).

20. Mbeto - bed e.g  Mbeto na ye ezali malamu.

LINGALA - SWAHILI SIMILARITIES

Lingala and Swahili are both in the Bantu group of languages spoken in East and Central Africa. Lingala is  spoken throughout the northwestern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R.C) where it serves as the lingua franca of the region. It is a common misconception that Lingala is spoken only in D.R.C. In fact, Lingala is also spoken in large parts of the Republic of the Congo, Angola and the Central African Republic. Swahili on the other hand is spoken mainly in East Africa and some parts of Southern Africa. This article aims to explore some etymological similarities between Lingala and Swahili words. Even though the similarity between these two languages is much broader and goes beyond the scope of this article (and includes phonological, syntax and etymological similarities), the face-value similarities is a good place to start our investigation.
