CONGOLESE RHUMBA MUSICIANS YOU'VE PROBABLY NEVER HEARD OF

When we think about Congolese Rhumba we immediately think of established names like Ferre Gola, Fally Ipupa, Koffi Olomide, Canta Nyboma, Madilu System, Franco Makiadi, Niko Kasanada, Tabu Ley, Simaro Lutumba, Bozi Boziana, Awilo Longomba, Mbilia Bell, Faya Tess and Nyoka Longo - to mention but a few. But what if I told you that there are probably thousands other artists you've probably never heard of? Just like any other successful musical genre, Congolese rumba attracts many artists and musicians. It is almost the glamour division of Congolese music. While some artists have made it big in the genre and their fame travels far and wide, other have had but modest success and remain relatively unknown. This article aims to profile these little known musicians, who surprisingly are not short on talent - and bring them into your world. Because not much information exists on them, I'll just put to you the much I've been able to gather: 1. Letis Madilu - This one really need n...

TOP LUO MUSICIANS OF THE PAST DECADE

The evolution of Luo music continues. In comes synthesizers, auto-tune, modern studio production equipment and video production with lots of glitz and glamour. Gone are the days when videos were shot at middle-class clubs with poor lighting and little to no professionalism. All the videos looked the same: same dancers, same dance moves and almost similar attire. All these are forever gone. There is  a new wave catching on and the Luo music fans can look to a great future. The past decade beginning 2010 has seen proliferation of Luo Rhumba and Ohangla artists jostling to make names for themselves. Benga as a genre has been on the wane but still maintains its presence like a bad smell that just wont go away. There are probably thousands of Luo musicians in the world today but for the purpose of this article I'll consider only those who have made a mark in the past decade, in no particular order. This list, however, is by no means exhaustive. 1. John Junior - John Junior has ruled ...

THE END OF AN ERA

It was Saturday the 8th, February when the green army in full party mood and attire painted the Narok Stadium green. Sofapaka FC was the home side but Gor Mahia fans, as always, outnumbered their host ten to one. It should have been a routine Gor Mahia victory. No Gor Mahia fan or anybody for that matter can recall the last time the club christened "The Government" lost to Sofapaka. Gor Mahai fans were already looking past this fixture. according to them, the three points were already in the bag. Except, at the final whistle it was the handful of Sofapaka fans who were celebrating. Gor Mahia did not know what hit them. In the end, it was a comfortable victory for the "Batoto Ba Mungu". And so emphatic it was that the usually humble John Baraza, the soft spoken Sofapaka coach, said it would be impossible for Gor Mahia to beat them again. Gor Mahia were outfought and outclassed in every way. Gor Mahia have lost matches but not like this. They looked like headless chi...
